Some businesses may encounter their cordless handsets disconnecting when they walk too far away from the base station. To help expand the area of coverage that these handsets can function in, a DECT repeater can be installed.
A DECT repeater that can be used alongside Yealink cordless handsets is the Yealink RT3. This specific DECT Repeater model is designed to extend the range of Yealink DECT cordless handsets, such as the W60P. It is compliant with the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication (DECT) standard.
If you own an RT30, follow this guide to learn how you can register and install it so that your cordless handsets can function to the best of their ability.

Step 1: De-register the Repeater
To ensure the repeater has its factory default settings, it is recommended to perform a factory reset. This will ensure the repeater can easily register to your business' base station.
To trigger a factory reset for a repeater:
- Ensure the repeater is disconnected from power.
- Power the repeater for 1-5 seconds and then power it off.
- Power the repeater for 25-35 seconds more seconds and then power it off.
✔ When the repeater is later turned on, it should be factory reset and ready for registration.
Step 2: Register the Repeater
Once you have factory reset the RT30 repeater, you can register it to your Yealink base station.
- Ensure your cordless handsets' base station is connected to power and the internet.
- Ensure the repeater is unpowered and within the range of the base station.
-
Enable Repeater Mode for the base station using a cordless handset.
Enable Repeater Mode Using a Handset
1. Press the OK button on a cordless handset.
2. Navigate to Settings using the arrow buttons.
3. Select System Settings from the menu.
4. Scroll down and select Repeater Mode.
5. In the Repeater Mode menu, select RT30.
6. You should see a warning stating "Setting takes effect after base reboot. Reboot now or not?". Press the Yes softkey.
7. Wait for the base to finish rebooting and the handset to show it is registered.✔ Your base station should now be in Repeater Mode.
- While Repeater Mode is enabled for the base station, hold down Wireless button on the base station for 2 seconds.
- While the base's Handset LED is flashing, connect the repeater to power.
- If the base station is found and the RT30 is attempting to register, the DECT LED on the RT30 should start flashing orange.
- Wait until the DECT LED turns green or orange.
✔ The DECT LED showing as a solid green or orange indicates that registration to the base station is successful. The repeater should now be paired and ready to be deployed.
Step 3: Placement and Testing
Once the RT30 Repeater has registered to your base station, you can begin the process of moving the repeater to a spot away from the base station to extend your cordless handsets’ range.
NOTE: Please keep the limitations listed below in mind while deciding where to set up a repeater.
• Each RT30 repeater can handle up to 4 concurrent calls.
• Avoid placing the repeater near obstacles that can interfere with radio transmission, such as thick walls and metal structures/appliances.
• Avoid placing the repeater next to electrical appliances, such as printer, microwaves, computers, and network equipment.
• If you are using multiple repeaters, keep a minimum of 10 meters between each repeater to avoid overlapping coverage.
• If there are no walls, the max range for a cordless phone from the repeater is up to 300 meters.
• If there are walls, then max distance is up to 50 meters from a repeater or base (depending on your configuration).
A good spot to place/mount a repeater can be found by walking around while on a call with a handset and monitoring the DECT LED of the repeater.
Do the following to find an optimal location for the RT30 repeater:
- Place a call using a cordless handset next to its base station.
- While on the call, walk away from the base until you start to hear noise on the line.
- Take note of the area where you started to hear noise on the call.
- Take the repeater to the area you have found and examine the color of the DECT LED.
- When the DECT LED is green, there is a strong signal between the repeater and the base station.
- When the DECT LED is orange, the signal is weak and cordless handsets may experience issues.
- When the DECT LED is red, the repeater is too far away from the base station.
- Place or mount the repeater in a raised position in that area.
Quick Tip: It is recommended to have the base station and repeater placed on a raised position, such as a mount or shelf that is higher on a wall. This will ensure the devices are above most obstacles and electrical appliances that may interfere with signaling.
Set Up the Repeater
Now that you have found an ideal location for a repeater, you can either stand up the repeater using its base, or mount the repeater to a wall.
If you would like to have the repeater stand, align the snap-fits of the base with the corresponding holes on the back of the RT30. Push the snap-fits in until you hear a click. Check and make sure the base is firmly attached before placing the repeater down.
You also have the option of mounting the repeater to a wall. This can be done by installing anchors 59mm apart on a wall for the RT30’s anchor holes to connect to.
Using Multiple Repeaters
If you have multiple RT30 repeaters, you can set them up next to each other to expand the area of coverage.
If the signal of your RT30 repeaters is good (green DECT LED), then each repeater can have up to four calls (external and internal calls) at any time. The repeater can be used to extend the range (up to 300m in unobstructed outdoor areas and up to 50m inside buildings) in a single direction or in all directions.
Use the module below to view two common layouts used for multiple repeaters: Cascade and Star.
Cascade Layout
Two RT30 repeaters can be placed in a sequential or "daisy chain" layout to extend the range in a single direction.
Star Layout
Up to 6 repeaters can be registered to one base station to extend the range in a star layout. All repeaters must be installed within the base station coverage, as shown in the figure below.
If these repeaters are placed properly (overlapping the coverage of the base station), the handsets can move freely within the total coverage while on a call.
Cascade Registration
If you are wanting to connect a second repeater to another repeater, you can do so using cascade registration. With this setup, one repeater would register to a repeater that is closer to the base station (aka, the destination repeater).
If the destination repeater de-registers, the second repeater does as well. However, if the second repeater de-registers from the destination repeater, the destination repeater will stay connected to the base station. Up to 2 repeaters can be registered to a base station in this way.
Cascade registration can be done in two ways: Auto Cascade Registration and Manual Cascade Registration.
Note: Before the cascade registration, you should first register both repeaters to the base station. It is also recommended to put the two cascaded repeaters closer to each other.
Auto Cascade Registration
1. Long press the Program button on one repeater for 3 seconds.
2. While the repeater starts searching for the other repeater, the POWER LED should turn orange while the DECT LED flashes green.
3. Wait until the POWER LED turns green and the DECT LED turns green/orange. This would indicate that auto cascade registration is successful.
Manual Cascade Registration
1. On one repeater, press the Program button to confirm its ID.
2. Take note of how many times the RELAY LED flashes. This indicates this repeater's ID.
3. Press the Program button again to return to the operation mode.
4. On the other repeater, long press the Program button for 3 seconds.
5. Press the Program button as soon as POWER LED turns orange and DECT LED flashes green.
6. Press the Program button a number of times that matches the first repeater's ID.
For example… If the first repeater's ID is 2, I would need to press the other repeater's Program button twice.
7. Once the POWER LED turns orange and DECT LED turns green, press and hold the Program button for 3 seconds to confirm the ID.
8. Wait for the repeater to finish searching for the repeater to be cascaded, which will be indicated by the POWER LED turning green and the DECT LED flashing orange.
9. Once the POWER LED turns green and the DECT LED turns green or orange, manual cascade registration is successful.
ID Modification
Each repeater registered to a single base station will need its own ID. This ID is used by the base station to distinguish the repeaters from one another.
Sometimes while registering multiple repeaters, some repeaters may experience a Repeater ID conflict.
Quick Tip: The RT30 repeater will indicate that there is a Repeater ID conflict using its LEDs, which would show as the following:
• RELAY - Off
• DECT - Alternately flashing red and green
• POWER - Green
If this does occur, the repeater ID of the repeaters experiencing a conflict will need to be manually modified.
- Press the Program button to confirm the ID.
Quick Tip: The number of times that the RELAY LED flashes indicates the repeater's numerical ID.
- Long press the Program button for 7 seconds to enter the ID Modification Mode.
- Once both the POWER LED and DECT LED turn red, press the Program button a specific number of times to enter an ID that matches the number of times the Program button was pushed.
For example… If I wanted the ID of a repeater to be 5, I would need to press the Program button five times.
- To confirm the ID, long press the program key for 3 seconds.
- Wait for the repeater to re-register.
✔ The DECT LED should be solidly green or orange to indicate that registration to the base station was successful. The repeater should now be paired and ready to be deployed.
LED Status
On the RT30 Repeater, there will be three LEDs that indicate the status of three functions: RELAY, DELAY, and POWER. You can examine the color of these LEDs and the way they flash to get an idea for how the repeater is functioning.
Use the table below to learn the status these LED lights may indicate:
