Unlike desk phones, cordless handsets do not have speed dial BLF buttons on the sides that can be easily pressed to place calls. As a workaround, you can create contacts and assign speed dials to the buttons number pad. This is commonly done to make parking calls and dialing important contacts more efficient.
Create Contacts
Each cordless handset has a Directory that contacts can be added to. Once a contact is added, you can press the call button while hovering over a contact to place a call to that person or business. These contacts that you add can be edited and deleted as needed.
To create contacts…
- Do one of the following to access your handset's Directory:
- Press the Left navigation key.
- Press the OK button to access the menu and select Contacts.
- In the Local Phonebook menu,
- For WP816 handsets, press the Options softkey and select New Contact.
- For WP836 handsets, press the Add softkey.
- In the New Contact menu, type a name and the contact's phone number or extension number.

Quick Tip: Some people may create contacts for their parks to make picking up parked calls easier. The extension numbers for the parks are as follows:
• Park 1 = 701
• Park 2 = 702
• Park 3 = 703 - To save the contact, press the OK softkey.
✔ You should see the contact(s) listed.

You can press the Dial Key
to place a call to that contact. You can also use the Contcts softkey on the handset's dial screen so that you can use your contacts to start a transfer, a conference call, or a new call.
Assign Speed Dials
The buttons on the number pad can be programmed to do certain functions when held down. One of the most common functions assigned to the number buttons are speed dials. These speed dials can be used to quickly dial a coworker, telephone number, park, or any other special contact number
Quick Tip: Each handset can have up to 7 speed dials, which can be assigned to buttons 2-9 on the keypad.
There is not a #1 option since the 1 button on the keypad is reserved for calling the handset's voicemailbox.
To add a speed dial for one of your contacts…
- Press the OK button to access the Menu.
- Use the navigation keys to select Settings.
- In the Settings menu, navigate to Basic Settings → Key Customization → Number Keys.
- In the Number Keys menu, select the number you want to set as a speed dial.

Quick Tip: The number spot that you select correlates to the number on the handset's keypad. Assigning a contact to one of these numbers will turn that number on the keypad into a speed dial button.
As a reminder, there is not a #1 option since the 1 button on the keypad is reserved for calling the handset's voicemailbox.
Some people may assign the parks as speed dial buttons for their handsets to make parking an retrieving calls simpler. Buttons 4, 5, and 6 are usually assigned to the parks so that the buttons are side-by-side.
- Input the following information:

- Long press function - Select Speed Dial.
-
Account - Make sure Account 1 (which shows the handset's extension number) is selected.
WARNING: By default, each handset will have Account 1 registered to its extension number.
Selecting Account 2 or Account 3 can cause your phone to display an error that says the account is disabled when you attempt to hold down the speed dial key to place calls.
-
Number - Type the extension number
Quick Tip: If the speed dial button will be used to dial a park, you can enter the park's extension number:
• 701 = Park 1
• 702 = Park 2
• 703 = Park 3 - Label - Type a name for the speed dial.
- Press the OK softkey.
✔ That speed dial will now be assigned to the number button on the handset's keypad. Holding down that button on the keypad will call the extension number or phone number.
For example… If you assign a speed dial that dials 101 to the number 2 button, holding down the 2 button on the keypad will dial the coworker that uses extension 101.
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each speed dial you need to add.
